Montreal was once considered the Canadian cultural capital and to many it still is. Although it can be said that since the separatist Parti Quebecoise passed legislation in the late 70’s making French the common public language, the province suffered as major financial and artistic institutions have moved to Toronto.

However, the Montreal Biennale still remains a highlight of the Canadian Arts Calendar. Since the 1990’s Montreal has begun to reclaim its reputation as a the sexy, romantic cultural capital of Canada, and the arts and business are flourishing.

The city itself is quite breath taking and the biennale is definitely worth visiting.

This year, under the title Crack the Sky the Biennale de Montreal will assemble a selection of recent unpublished works from more than sixty artists. “Under different themes, this edition proposes abroad look at the contemporary art at production of a new generation of Canadian artists.”

With a number of opening events and informative lectures and talks, as well as guided tours the biennale will definitely be a venue not to miss.

Crack the Sky runs from May 10th to July 8th and is located at a number of sites across the city. Click here for more location information.
